Радикальный аболиционист [abolitionists], деятель периода беспорядков в Канзасе [Bleeding Kansas]. До начала политической карьеры без особого успеха занимался бизнесом в штатах Огайо, Пенсильвания, Массачусетс и Нью-Йорк. В Пенсильвании содержал станцию "Подземной железной дороги" [Underground Railroad]. В 1855 вместе с пятью сыновьями переселился в Канзас, чтобы содействовать созданию свободного штата [free state], возглавил поселение, ставшее позднее г. Осаватоми [Osawatomie]. Узнав о победе сторонников рабства в нескольких населенных пунктах, во главе небольшого отряда напал на пятерых человек и убил их. Вскоре провозгласил себя посланцем Божьим и стал известен всей стране под прозвищем "Старик Браун из Осаватоми" [Old Brown of Osawatomie]. В 1857 начал собирать отряды, провел съезд своих сторонников в Канаде и запланировал освободить рабов путем вооруженной интервенции, которая спровоцировала бы стихийные восстания на местах. В начале 1859 арендовал ферму недалеко от г. Харперс-Ферри [Harpers Ferry] для подготовке к вторжению. В ночь на 16 октября вместе с 21 сподвижником переправился через р. Потомак [Potomac River] и, не встречая особого сопротивления, захватил армейский арсенал и город. После этого по непонятным причинам Браун прекратил какие-либо действия, в то время как местные ополченцы и отряд морских пехотинцев под командованием полковника Р. Ли [Lee, Robert Edward] на следующее утро успешно выбили повстанцев из городка. В ходе боя 10 человек из отряда Брауна погибли, сам он получил ранение. Новости о рейде Брауна произвели на южан шокирующее впечатление. Самого аболициониста судили и повесили 2 декабря 1859. Его достойное поведение во время суда создало в глазах общественности образ мученика, а песня "Тело Джона Брауна" [John Brown's Body] через несколько лет стала одной из самых популярных в рядах Армии северян [Union Army]
